Obituary: Harriet Carpenter, age 96 of Norwalk, died on Friday July 8, 2011 at home. Born in Stamford, she worked for 35 years at Save the Children Federation as an administrator. She met her husband at the Hat Corporation of America in the late 1930’s where she worked as a secretary to the president and married the chief chemist of the corporation, Samuel Carpenter. Her vision of a modern life was abridged, however, by a move to Maplewood Farm in NH where her lifestyle reflected the bucolic, traditional American farm-life at the time, characterized by plucking chickens, canning vegetables and herding cattle. Not the glamorous life she originally envisioned! She is survived by her son Samuel, a sister Hilde Carusone of Walnut Creek, CA, well loved nieces and nephews including Janice Everson of Wilton, who lovingly assisted her in her final years. She was predeceased by her husband and her daughter Constance Carpenter and 3 sisters, Dorothy Goldstein, Doris Russell and Georgia Bowen. A memorial service will be held for Harriet onSunday, August 21st, 2.p.m. at the First Congregational Church on the Green in Norwalk. Memorial donations may be made to: Save the Children Federation, 54 Wilton Rd. Westport, CT 06880, or CT Hospice, 1 Park St. Norwalk, 06851. |
