Ann was born on 11/15/1918 in Kansas City, Kansas. She was raised in Mount Vernon, New York where she attended high school. She subsequently graduated from Pratt Art Institute and was a lifelong watercolorist. She was a dedicated art teacher beginning at The Riverdale School for Boys and ending with informal classes she taught for other residents when she moved to The Greens at Cannondale, an assisted living facility in Wilton, Connecticut. She delighted in painting still life pictures particularly of flower arrangements. Ann married the love of her life, Dr. A. John Dodds, a Captain in the US Army and a history professor. Her marriage took her to many different locations including Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, FT. Campbell Kentucky., Ft. Beaumont, Texas, San Marcos, California, Aurora, Illinois, Mahopac, New York, and Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. Following the death of her husband she moved to Wilton, Connecticut where she resided since 1997. Wherever Ann moved she quickly made fast friends with her optimistic and loving personality. As far as her family can remember she literally never expressed a negative opinion about anyone. She was a woman of great spiritual faith who made herself useful every day of her life. She was particularly noted for her work with sight impaired individuals and homeless children. While living in California she became an active member of the Braille Club of Escondido. She arranged transportation for sight impaired individuals in the isolated agricultural communities near where she lived and she developed a popular clay sculpture class for members of the Braille Club. Her family will fondly remember her for the kindness she showed for the menagerie of stray animals that were fortunate enough to happen by her house. Her dedication to her two sons was constant. Ann is predeceased by her husband, Dr. A. John Dodds who was a Professor of History at East Stroudsburg State University, and is survived by the younger sister she adored, Ruthie Beacom of Raleigh, North Carolina. She is survived by her sons, Dr. Jon H. Dodds of Cooper City, Florida and Dr. Peter R. Dodds of Wilton, Connecticut. She is survived by her grandchildren, Sean and Phillip Dodds of Gainsville, Florida, Jessica Dodds Cooper of New York City, Dr. Tyler Dodds of Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and three great-grandchildren. A graveside ceremony, officated by Pastor David Cornell will be held for her on Saturday, at the Kellers Cherry Valley Cemetery at 11:30AM . In lieu of flowers, Ann would have preferred that at her passing her friends and acquaintances in the CT area offered a gift to the charity of their choice. Ann’s family would like to thank the staff at Wilton Meadows Health Care Center and Dr. Alan Radin for her care. In particular they are appreciative of the thoughtful and dignified care rendered during her final days. Ann was a devoted Christian and member of the First Baptist Church of East Stroudsburg. In lieu of flowers it would have pleased Ann to know that her friends and acquaintances from PA gave generously to the First Baptist Church of East Stroudsburg. |
