Reverend Monsignor Joseph J. Kohut

December 12, 1918 ~ August 5, 2017 (age 98) 98 Years Old

Reverend Monsignor Joseph J. Kohut, 98, of Norwalk, entered eternal life on August 5, 2017, at Notre Dame Health and Rehabilitation Center. Born in Peekskill, NY, the son of the late Michael and Barbara (Biro) Kohut, Joseph had served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning a Bronze Star Medal, as well as in the Air Force during the Korean War.  He graduated St. Jerome’s College in Ontario and attended Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland, and was ordained a Catholic priest on May 26, 1962.  Over the span of more than 55 years as a priest, our beloved Msgr. Joe blessed and touched countless lives in his service to Our Lord.  Msgr. Joe was assigned to many diocesan parishes and was pastor of St Rose of Lima in Newtown & then pastor of St Matthew in Norwalk, from where he retired.  He went on after retirement to serve as Chaplain at All Saints Catholic School, where he spread peace, love & joy to faculty and students alike. Msgr. Joe was also a member of the Catholic War Veterans and the Knights of Columbus.  He spent a six-month sabbatical at Notre Dame (South Bend, Indiana) and was one of its most devoted fans.

Predeceased by his brothers Michael, Francis, John and his sister Eleanor, he is survived by his nephews; James Kohut (Sally) and Robert Kohut (Cathy).  A great nephew, Loren, also survives him.

Calling Hours will be held on Thursday, August 10th, from 4-7 PM at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Ave, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial, celebrated by Bishop Frank Caggiano, will take place at St. Matthew Church on Friday, August 11th, at 11 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at 3:00 PM at Assumption Cemetery, 1055 Oregon Rd, Cortlandt Manor, NY  10567

In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name to: SSTV-Capital Improvements – which will greatly benefit Notre Dame Health-Nursing and Rehabilitation Center at: 76 West Rocks Road, Norwalk CT  06851
