Edward Charles Berndt

October 6, 1923 ~ August 15, 2015 (age 91) 91 Years Old

Edward Charles Berndt Jr., 91, of Norwalk left us peacefully from his home on Saturday August 15, 2015. Beloved husband of Barbara (Rogers) Berndt for 58 years, he was born October 6, 1923 in Norwalk, CT to the late Edward C. Berndt Sr. and Jessie (Jennings) Berndt.

After graduating Norwalk High School and attaining his BS in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute, he proudly served our country in the Navy during World War II. While working as an elevator inspector for Otis Elevator in NYC, Ed earned his MBA from Columbia University at night. In 1952 he began his career at PerkinElmer traveling the world and advancing to Director of Global Marketing, before fully retiring in 1990.

An avid golfer and fierce competitor since his youth, he was a longtime member of Shorehaven Golf Club where he was a 7-time club champion and served as Board Member and President.  After moving to NC, Ed played golf well into his 80's, and was an active player in the American Contract Bridge League where he became a Bronze Life Master.

Ed was a loving and devoted husband, father, coach, mentor, a man of few words and unflinching quick wit.  He taught us quiet integrity, generosity, and respect for all others through his steadfast example.

Ed is survived by his wife Barbara, daughter Mary Beth Fleury, three sons Edward, Daniel and Matthew, his sister Clare Wood, nine grandchildren, one great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his son Benjamin,   and sisters Martha Berndt, Sue Baginski and Cathy Hotchkiss .
