George P. Smith

May 3, 1919 ~ October 18, 2016 (age 97) 97 Years Old

George P. Smith, 97, of Norwalk passed away peacefully Tuesday, October 18 after a lengthy illness. Born May 3, 1919 in Norwalk, George lived a long and colorful life. He came from very humble beginnings and worked hard for many years as a union plumber for the benefit of his family. George was married for over 50 years and was predeceased by his wife, Adeline (Puskas) Smith. For his last 13 years, George was fortunate to have Caroline A. Kelley as a loving and loyal companion to be by his side as his journey ended. Caroline and George were active members of the Widows and Widowers organization and were excellent dancers. George served in the Navy in World War II and saw combat action in the Philippines and the South Pacific. After the war, he pursued his passion for family and fishing. He loved fly fishing for trout in local streams as well as being in his boat trawling for striped bass and bluefish.
He is survived by two sons, George F. Smith and James D. Smith; grandchildren Kyle Eckert, Danielle Canzanella and her husband Paul, Michelle Smith, and Melinda, Melissa and Nicole Smith of FL, as well as many great-grandchildren.
His family will receive friends on Friday from 5 to 8 PM at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave, Norwalk. A Funeral Mass will be held at 10am on Saturday, Oct. 22, at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Ave, Norwalk, with military burial to follow at St. John Cemetery, Norwalk.
