Greta Elvira (Jacobson) Snellman

     Greta E. J. Snellman of Norwalk died peacefully in her home surrounded by her family on May 25, 2016 at the age of 86. Born September 3, 1929 in Brooklyn, New York to Carl (“John”) and Selma Jacobson, who were both immigrants from the Åland Islands, Finland.  In 1956 she moved with her parents to Norwalk.

     Greta graduated from Bay Ridge High School and went on to work as a secretary at American Machine and Foundry (AMF).  She later worked in Snellman Construction, the family business. She loved and was loved by many family and friends. Her quick wit, bright sense of humor and caring nature will be missed by all. The family is particularly thankful for Arleen Villenueva and Anna Poplawska who took such wonderful care of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother.

     She is survived by her sister, Gunvor Liven of Poway, CA; two children, John (Kathy) Snellman of Norwalk and Lisabet (Phillip) Alexander of Omaha, NE; four grandchildren, Raymond (Laura) LeBlanc, Marlane Osborne, John Snellman, Jr., and Mark Snellman; and two great-grandchildren, Karina Osborne and Dylan LeBlanc. As Greta was fond of saying, each of her family members was a “piece of her,” and they would not be here without her.

     A memorial service will be held at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, 208 Newtown Avenue, Norwalk on June 1, 2016.  Church will be open at 4:00 PM and service will start at 4:30 PM.
