Hugh C Johannessen

Hugh C. Johannessen, 89, of Norwalk passed away on Nov. 29, 2016. Hugh had been active until several weeks prior, succumbing to congestive heart failure. He was born in Teaneck, NJ in 1927.

Hugh spent a year in the Merchant Marine travelling the oceans in 1945-46 and subsequently worked for Esso/Standard Oil in Manhattan. In 1950-51 he served in the 92nd Armored Field Artillery (the “Red Devils” Battalion) in Korea and more recently has participated in numerous unit reunions.

He married Renee Johannessen in 1957 and they lived in Manhattan and Westchester County until moving to Norwalk in 1959. Hugh got his BA from Fairly Dickenson University and a Masters degree from the University of Bridgeport. Hugh changed careers in the late 60s, becoming a math teacher at Burdick Middle School in Stamford CT for many years before transferring to Rippowam High School in Stamford, retiring in 1992.

Hugh was a dedicated husband and father. To send their three sons to college, Hugh and Renee started and ran Lawn King, a lawn care business, from their home in Norwalk while Hugh continued teaching math. Hugh spent time at the family's vacation house in Seaview, (on Fire Island) NY over much of his life and was a member of the Shore and County Club in Norwalk over the last half century.

Hugh is survived by his wife Renee of 59 years, his son Chris and wife Megan of Stratford CT, son Jeff and partner Amy of Harrisville NH, son Jim, wife Tracie and their two children of Bellingham, WA and Hugh's brother Neil of Essex, CT. A family gathering will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations to Jamie’s Run for Connecticut Children’s (www.jamiesrun.org) can be made.
