Mafalda M (Mariani) Scordo

July 10, 1920 ~ May 19, 2015 (age 94) 94 Years Old

Mafalda Scordo,  94, of Norwalk, died peacefully on Tuesday May 19th, 2015 at Broad River Homes. Born in Senigallia, Italy the daughter of the late Maria and Joseph Mariani, she traveled here with her parents at a young age and lived in Norwalk all her life, the oldest child of six. She was the loving wife of the late Carmine Scordo, whom she married in 1944 and together they remained in Norwalk where they raised their daughters.   Mafalda volunteered often at St. Joseph’s School, helping in any way that she could. Several years later she took a position at the South Norwalk Public Library, where she worked at the Children’s Desk. She was an avid reader so it was a perfect match for her!  She so enjoyed all aspects of her daughters’ lives, especially becoming a grandmother and then a great-grandmother. She was Grandma Scordo to many, Nonni to some and loved by all. She was famous for her Italian cookies which she sent to college along with her grandchildren! Like a good Italian grandmother, no one ever went hungry at her house.  She will be missed by the many people whose lives she touched. The family is very appreciative of the loving care of her caregiver Maria Renzulli.

She is survived by her two daughters and their spouses, Susan and Mario Scalisi, and Phyllis Scordo-Duran and husband Michael Duran, five grandchildren, Kristin Scalisi and her fiancé Tyler Wehmeier, Dana Scalisi Weller and her husband Craig, Lindsey Duran Sberna and her husband Nicholas, Jordan Duran and Spencer Duran; 4 great –grandchildren, Madeline and Alexander Weller, and Hadley and Griffin Sberna; and her sisters, Josephine Ryan and Mary Toss.  She was predeceased by her brothers Sam and Alexander Mariani and her sister Ethel Giunta.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew Church, on Friday, May 29th, at 10:30 AM, followed by interment at St. John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers Memorial Donations may be made to the American Macular Degeneration Foundation. (www.macular.org.)
