Marie Antoinette (Vassallo) Calka

     Marie Antoinette Calka, daughter of the late Sally and George Vassallo and sister to the late George Vassallo, Jr., was called home on July 27, 2015 at the Norwalk Hospital after a long illness.  A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many, she was a dedicated retired teacher/owner of the Apple Tree Pre-school.  Marie moved to Norwalk at an early age and was a graduate of Norwalk High School, Class of 1963.  She loved caring for her grandchildren, enjoyed flea markets and trips to the Amish Country.  Marie was also very artistic and loved to cook.

     Survivors include her loving husband Tom Calka, her devoted daughters and spouses Gerri and Scott Flewellyn and Cami and Kevin Engel, grandchildren Jake and Tommy Flewellyn and Kelsey and Kevin Engel, who she adored.  Also surviving are her sisters, Pam and husband Dave Simso and Debbie Vertucci, as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

     From her daughters: Marie was a mother who couldn’t have worked harder to make our lives as best as could be.  Mom we loved you dearly and appreciate all the sacrifices you made for us and the guidance you gave us growing up.  Your patience, helpful caring ways and the special thoughtful things you did all brightened up our days.  We will truly miss you, we love you and know you are our guardian angel watching over us until one day we will all be together again.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, July 30, 10 AM at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 203 East Ave., Norwalk, with burial to follow at St. John Cemetery.  Marie’s family will receive friends at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., Norwalk on Wednesday from 4-8 PM.  Donations in her name may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (http://jdrf.org/).
