Michael Barber, age 82 of Wellfleet, Massachusetts and Palm City, Florida, passed away surrounded by his family in Hyannis, Massachusetts on Saturday July 16, 2016. He was the beloved husband of Virginia Gilbertie Barber for 61 years.

Born the son of the late John and Josephine Milazzo Barber in Norwalk, Connecticut. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children Michael Barber Jr. and his wife Ilona, Gail Barber-Reed and her husband Edward, John Barber and his wife Moira, and Sharon Vuoso and her husband John; five grandchildren; Timothy, Vanessa, Mary Katherine, Bianca, and Isabella; and a sister Theresa “Teddi” Barber.  He is predeceased by a sister Joan Barber.

Michael served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Michael received his Bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State College. He also had earned his Masters in Education and Sixth Year from The University of Bridgeport. Michael worked for 35 years in the Norwalk Public Schools predominantly as a guidance counselor. He was also one of the founding fathers of The Center Of Vocational Arts now known as Briggs.

Michael was an avid golfer, playing 4 to 5 times a week. He also enjoyed playing bridge and enjoyed clamming at his favorite Cape Cod beach. He was also a 4th Degree Knight with The Knights of Columbus, Stuart Chapter. He was a member of The Elk’s Club, a former Laurel’s Athletic Club and Neptune Boat Club member.

The Barber family will receive family and friends on Tuesday, July 19 from 4:00 to 8:00PM at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, July 20 at 10:00AM in St. Philip Church, 1 Father Conlon Place, Norwalk. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery, 223 Richards Avenue, Norwalk, CT.
