Obituary:
Tom Steinert-Threlkeld, age 59 and loving husband of Kayte Steinert-Threlkeld, died Sunday, October 20, in a cycling accident in Bethel. Tom was born in New Jersey on June 20, 1954, the son of the late Aubrey and Elizabeth Morgan Threlkeld. He was the Editorial Director of B2B Publishing at IBT Media and was an avid road cyclist.
Tom was a lifelong journalist who investigates and explains how technology is used to achieve business goals. He has a wide range of interests in various sectors of the economy, exploring and explaining the intersection of information technology with corporate performance in capital markets (at Securities Technology Monitor and Securities Industry News), in television (at Multichannel News and Broadcasting & Cable) and technology itself (at metropolitan daily newspapers as well as Interactive Week, Baseline and ZDNet). Tom conceived and founded Baseline magazine, which specifically examined how businesses achieved or failed to achieve their objectives, through the use of information systems, in 2001. He and his team made it a finalist for General Excellence in the National Magazine Awards presented by the American Society of Magazine Editors within four years. Baseline also won, among other honors, the Grand Neal Award, for an investigation that uncovered a series of deaths in Panama that related to a faulty piece of software developed by a St. Louis, Mo., company.
He is a former business columnist and technology reporter for The Dallas Morning News and the Fort Worth Star-Telegram in Texas. He and Kayte also owned and operated a series of weekly newspapers in the Fort Worth area in the mid-1980s. Tom is a graduate of the Harvard Business School and the University of Missouri School of Journalism.
His passion outside of work was cycling and photography. His blog, Edge of the Road.com, has tracked Tom's rides and rides of others over the years. He has logged roughly six thousand miles each year riding through Connecticut and New York and in the 1995, cycled across the United States in 22 days.
In addition to his wife Kayte, Tom is survived by his two sons, Zachary Caleb Steinert-Threlkeld of San Diego, CA, and Shane Noah Steinert-Threlkeld of Stanford, CA, his twin brother John Threlkeld of Evergreen, CO, his sister Laura Threlkeld Anello of Rockaway, NJ, and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held for Tom on Saturday, October 26, 11 AM at Cobb's Mill Inn. In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Weston Warm-Up Fund or the Connecticut Humane Society.
