Frederick J. Bonhage, 88, of Norwalk died on Saturday, Feb 20, 2021 at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Baltimore, MD, to Frederick and Kathleen (Fox) Bonhage he was raised by his mother Kathleen. He was the beloved husband of Mary Margaret “Peggy” (Heckenberg) Bonhage for over 54 years.
Upon graduating from Greenwich High School in 1952 he joined the US. Coast Guard and served for 3 years at Brant Point Station, Nantucket, MA. In later years he was a proud member of the St. Ann’s Club where he continued to enjoy his love of boating.
Fred was the strong, silent type, with love for automobiles and a consummate handyman capable of fixing anything. As a great storyteller he enjoyed regaling friends with stories of travel and sea adventures over a good beer. He loved boating, sailing, and was a deckhand and sailing instructor before pursuing his career as a construction project supervisor. His career took him around the world, from New York City and Minneapolis, to Africa, India, and the Philippines, were he oversaw the construction of many prestigious Scientific and Medical Research Facilities.
Predeceased by his sister, Mary Anne Murphy, he is survived by his loving wife Peggy, sons Michael Robert Bonhage and John Frederick Bonhage, and three cherished grandchildren; Claire, Kate and Ryan Bonhage, as well as three nieces and one nephew.
His family will receive friends (limited to 25 at a time) on Friday, Feb 26, from 5-7 PM at Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave, Norwalk. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, Feb 27 at St. Matthew Church, Norwalk. (Masks and social distancing required, sign in at church on arrival) Other services will be held privately by his family.
