Helen Cafero Obituary

Helen Rose Cafero of Norwalk passed peacefully at home on December 17, 2023, surrounded by her loving family. She was 99 years old.

Born in Bridgeport, CT on December 12, 1924, Helen was the youngest child of Leonard and Christine Capozziello. Helen enjoyed a happy childhood surrounded by the constant love of her parents, her brother, her two sisters, and dozens of Aunts, Uncles, and cousins.

Having graduated from Central High School in Bridgeport in 1942, Helen attended New Haven Teachers College to realize her dream of becoming a teacher. That dream was cut short when Helen’s father and brother took ill, compelling her to return home to run the family business.   Her innate knack for business, no-nonsense attitude, and unrivaled work ethic served her well during her 12 year tenure as President of City Plumbing Supply Company. She was a pioneer in the industry, which was dominated by men, and was greatly respected by her colleagues and clients, alike. It was one of these clients, Donald Cafero, who set her up on a blind date with his brother. Little did she know Lawrence Cafero of Brooklyn, New York, would end up being the love of her life.

Helen and Larry were a devoted couple for over sixty years and were blessed with two sons, Lawrence Jr. and Donald. Helen was predeceased by her husband Larry, who died in 2015 at the age of 94.

Throughout her adult life, Helen was a devoted wife, and loving mother. Helen’s boys were the center of her world. She never missed a play, concert, or sporting event, and was infinitely proud of their accomplishments, big and small.

Nothing brought Helen more joy than hosting family and friends at her home in Norwalk. From holiday celebrations to summer pool parties, Helen was the consummate host, always ensuring her guests were well-fed with her famous meatballs and pistachio cake.

Helen and Larry also shared a deep love of traveling. They were blessed to travel to over 30 countries and instilled in their children and grandchildren this insatiable desire to learn about different cultures. Helen also parlayed this interest into a second career, working as a travel agent at Rowlison Travel Agency for 18 years.

Additionally, Helen had a quick wit, a biting sense of humor, an infectious laugh, and a perfectly curated and expertly accessorized outfit for every occasion – all traits that her grandchildren deeply admire and hope to emulate in their lives.

Helen was extremely devoted to her Catholic faith and was a regular communicant at St. Matthew Church in Norwalk for over 60 years.  Above all, Helen lived for and unconditionally loved her family. In addition to her husband Larry, Helen is predeceased by her parents, Leonard and Christine, her siblings, Anthony Capozziello and his wife Gladys, Grace Oddie and her husband Joseph and Frances Inzerra and her husband Leonard, as well as her niece, Donna Jeanne Oddie and nephews Brian Capozelo, Byran Liberty and Benjamin Cafero.

Helen is survived by her sons, both of Norwalk, Lawrence Cafero, Jr. (Barbara) and Donald Cafero. In addition, Helen had six beloved grandchildren: Jacqueline Cafaro (Carl) of Wellesley, MA; Christopher Cafero and Nicholas Cafero, both of Los Angeles, CA; Donald Cafero, Jr. of New York City; and William Cafero and Robert Cafero, both of Westport, CT.  Helen was also very blessed to have had two great-grandchildren, Carmelo and Siena Cafaro of Wellesley, MA, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family will begin at 9:00 am on Friday, December 22nd  at St Mathew Church, 216 Scribner Ave, Norwalk, immediately followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10:30 am.  There will be a reception immediately following Mass in the Great Room of St. Matthew’s Church.

A private burial will be held at a later date.
