Maria Piro Sikes Obituary

Maria Carol Genuario Piro Sikes, loving mother, grandmother, daughter, wife, cousin, aunt, and friend to many, entered into eternal life on November 26, 2023, in Tampa, FL at the age of 90 years. Born in Yonkers, NY, on September 15, 1933, Maria was the proud daughter of her beloved parents, Arthur and Gemma Genuario.

Maria is adoringly remembered by so many as a kind, cheerful, classy and beautiful woman on the inside and out, with immense warmth and love generously exhibited by her bright blue-eyed smile, witty humor, infectious laugh and big heart.

She graduated from Norwalk High School in 1951 and attended the University of Massachusetts Amherst for two years before becoming a dental assistant, a position that she thoroughly enjoyed. From 1954 to 1985, she was married to Dr. John F. Piro of Norwalk CT, together with whom she raised their five children. In 1998, she married Clarence Sikes of Norwalk, CT with whom she enjoyed many national and international travel adventures, fun times with friends at their winter home in Jupiter, FL, as well as with their combined multitudes of grandchildren and great grands.

An active member of both Shore & Country Club and Shorehaven Golf Club, Maria was an avid athlete in tennis, golf and swimming in the summers. A social butterfly by nature, she participated in many of the club activities, lighting up the room with her presence and earning the admiration and love of many friends there. In the winter season, she had great fun skiing and hosting friends and relatives at the family vacation home near Mt. Snow, Vermont, where many happy memories were made. She delighted in entertaining and cooking for holiday gatherings for her vivacious and abundant extended Italian family.

Maria enthusiastically worked for many years as a Real Estate Agent with Piro Real Estate and Coldwell Banker in her lifelong hometown of Norwalk, CT. However, her greatest joy and purpose in life was that of being an exceedingly attentive, accepting and deeply caring mother and grandmother of unparalleled dedication. She made each and every one of her children and grandchildren feel as if they were the only one. Simply put, Maria had a magical way of unforgettably and unconditionally touching the lives of all those around her, masterfully fulfilling her soul’s appointed purpose.

Maria was predeceased by her father, Arthur Genuario, her mother, Gemma (Di Domenica) Genuario, her brothers, Lt. Col. Louis Genuario and Vincent Genuario, her first husband John F. Piro, M.D., her second husband Clarence Sikes, and her granddaughter Elizabeth Piro.
