Mary Jane (Walsh) Hughes

Mary Jane Hughes, 94, of Norwalk, died on Thursday, May 20, 2021 at Norwalk Hospital. Born in Bridgeport, the daughter of the late Dr. James F. and Genevieve (Powers) Walsh, she was also predeceased by her husband Donald A. Hughes, and six siblings; Dr. James Walsh, Thomas Walsh, Genevieve Walsh, Robert Walsh, John Walsh, and William Walsh. A graduate of Warren Harding High School and Smith College (Class of 1948), she taught elementary school in Westport but then left teaching to raise her four boys. Her family and sons and their own families became her main focus in life and provided her with a great sense of joy and satisfaction throughout her many years. She was active with church and school while raising her family and was most recently a parishioner of St. Jerome church.

She is survived by her children: Donald A. Hughes Jr. and his wife Katherine of Columbus, OH; Daniel J. Hughes II and his wife Vicki of Norwalk; Peter G. Hughes and his wife Paola of Willimantic; and Dr. Thomas W. Hughes and his wife Sherilyn of Louisville, KY;  and by 5 loving grandchildren: Ryan, Jessica, Brittany, David and Emma, and  by her cherished great-granddaughter, Kayla Herrera, as well as many loving nieces and nephews. Her family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 25, from 6-8 PM at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. Her Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 AM on Wednesday at St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Rd., Norwalk. Graveside burial will occur at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Bridgeport Rescue Mission or the Society of St. Vincent de Paul.
