Mildred "Millie" Lalime Obituary

Mildred Lalime, 93, wife of the late Arthur W. Lalime and favorite teacher of many Norwalk students, died peacefully on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at her home in Norwalk in the company of her loving family.  Fondly known as “Millie”, she was born in Boston, MA, the daughter of the late Thomas and Annie (Kelly) O’Neill. She was also predeceased by her brothers (Tom, Walter, and Richard “Dick”), her son, A. William Lalime, granddaughter Emily Elizabeth Lalime and grandson, Sean Lalime Sullivan.

Millie graduated from Salem State Teacher’s College in 1950, and later went on to earn both a Master’s Degree and a sixth Year Degree from Southern Connecticut State College.

She was a center of excellence and a master of recognizing and nurturing the unique qualities and strengths of those around her.  During her over 40+ year career as a teacher, 33 of those spent in Norwalk Public Schools, she shared her love of life, curiosity and engagement with the world.  All these years later, she still fondly remembers her students and the bonds she had with them. Millie was an avid reader, she loved cards, puzzles and games, and taught and played Mahjong with her friends at the Norwalk Senior Center.  She was a huge fan of her favorite sports teams: UConn Girls Basketball and the NY Mets. She loved her family endlessly, as they loved her, and through her love of books and stories, was known as the “Reading Grandmother” as well as “Beloved Auntie” to her numerous nieces and nephews. She enjoyed cross country camping trips, Cape Cod, and good conversation.

When her children were young, she and her husband were involved with youth education and also were one of the founding families of the St Jerome Parish. During retirement, she spent many joy filled afternoons at the Norwalk Senior Center and was a part of the Senior Center steering committee.

The family is deeply grateful to the many caring home health and nursing home care providers who helped and encouraged her in her later years. They wish to especially thank Paulette Hinds, friend and aide, for her dedication to Millie over the years.

She is survived by her devoted children; Ken and his wife Kathy, Michael and his wife Almarie and Paul “Bucky” and his wife Lori Lalime, and daughter Michelle “Shelli” Sullivan, her cherished grandchildren; Beth (Joe), Erin (Steve), Amy (Jon), Benjamin (Daryl), Daniel, Tyler, Michael (Torrie), Jill, Amanda (Jon), Patrick, Jack Lalime, and Lucie and William “Bill” Sullivan, and her beloved great-grandchildren, Oliver, Vivian, Samantha, Branch, Zane, Nora, Jonah and Ellie, and a host of loving nieces & nephews.

Her family will receive friends on Thursday, May 12 from 4-7 PM at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 13, at 11AM at St. Jerome Church, Norwalk, with burial to follow at St. John Cemetery.

Memorial donations may be made to: The Norwalk Senior Center, 11 Allen Rd., Norwalk, CT 06851, or St. Jerome Church, 23 Half Mile Rd, Norwalk, CT 06851.
