August 12, 1933 ~ September 5, 2021 (age 88) 88 Years Old

Robert Mendence, Sr. Obituary

     Robert A. Mendence, Sr., age 88 of Norwalk, died peacefully at River Glen Health Care Center in Southbury on September 5, 2021.  He was the husband for 58 years of the late Marie Jeanne (St. Denis) Mendence.  Bob was born on August 12, 1933 in Providence, RI, the son of the late Albert and Lucy (Marino) Mendence and was a lifelong Norwalk resident.  He graduated from Norwalk High School in 1951.  Bob served in the U.S. Navy from 1952-1956, stationed in Norfolk, VA, where he met his wife Marie Jeanne and then transferred to Naples, Italy.  After his service in the Navy Bob returned home to Norwalk and worked for Nash Engineering for 45 years, retiring as Methods Engineer.  He was a member of the Old Timers Club and the Laurel Athletic Club.  Bob was a coach in the Norwalk American Little league and co-founder of the David Kinlock Tournament.

     Survivors include 6 children and their spouses; Valerie (Robert) Mendence, Lauren (Robert) Mendence, Albert (Jeanette) Mendence, Robert Mendence, Jr., Dennis (Caroline) Mendence, and Margaret (Wendy) Mendence, 10 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren (with number 7 on the way), and several nieces and nephews.  Also surviving are a brother, Albert A. Mendence, Jr., brothers-in-law John St. Denis and Frank B. Schultz and sister-in-law Janice Mendence.  He was also predeceased by his brother Donald J. Mendence, Sr.

     A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 11, 12:30 PM at St. Matthew Church, 216 Scribner Ave., Norwalk.  Burial with full military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery.  Bob’s family will receive friends at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Ave., on Friday from 4-7 PM.  In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to Children’s Mercy Hospital (www.childrensmercy.org/)
