Ken Phelan, 74 of Westport, CT, passed away on July 12, 2016 after years of struggling with congestive heart failure.
Ken was born in the Bronx, NY on September 5, 1941. He graduated from Norwalk High School, and then enlisted in the US Navy for the next four years. He eventually went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in Religion and Philosophy from Goddard College in Plainfield, VT.
Ken was married to Sharon Ruane on September 18, 1965. They celebrated 50 wonderful years together in a loving marriage that continued to evolve over the course of his life.
Ken held many positions after having been honorably discharged from the Navy. He began as a sales representative, and eventually worked his way to vice president of an advertising firm. Along the way, he wrote award-winning advertising copy, and speeches for company executives, including the CEO. As a second career, Ken was a small business owner. He owned and operated both a wholesale food business and a heating and plumbing service. As with all who knew him, Ken was beloved by his customers.
Ken is survived by his loving and devoted wife Sharon; his three children and their spouses, Kelly & Thomas, Alan & Danielle, and Kimberly & Timothy; nine grandchildren including Sean (21), TJ (19), Ryan (13), Abigail (12), Emily (12), Jake (11), Alison (10), Katie (8), and Kevin (8); his brother Herb and sister Patricia. Ken projected a commanding presence, with a warm demeanor and a sense of humor that made all feel comfortable and welcomed in his company. He was truly loved by all as a good, kind, sensitive man.
Ken is preceded in death by his parents Herbert and Marjorie, as well as his brother Russell.
The funeral mass will be held at 10:00 am on Monday July 18, 2016 at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in East Norwalk, CT. Calling hours will be held at Magner Funeral Home at 12 Mott Avenue in Norwalk, CT on Sunday July 17, 2016 from 4 to 8:00 pm.
