Dear Family of Dr. Burke:
I was an interpreter with Dr. Burke at Americares during the course of 10 years. A great man with compassion for his patients and always shared his knowledge with all the staff. He will be truly missed by all of us at Americares.

Doctor Burke was my family doctor for many years. I was a preteen when he came to our house because my mom was so worried about how sick I was. It was a Saturday afternoon. Years later, after I was married, my son and daughter were 14 mos apart. My son developed Roseola, and I brought them in for Doc to see him. By the time I walked out of the examining room with Richard, Lori was in the carriage with my brother watching over her and she was red and screaming. Knowing this was not her personality he picked her up and examined her to find she had strep and an ear infection. He was a treasure to the community. One Sunday, I called the service and he phoned as soon as he was leaving mass. He asked me to meet him at his office and I packed up the kids and went over. We met out in the parking lot. He grabbed my daughter from me, I picked up my son and as he carried her to the door she was sick to her stomach all over him and the porch. Totally unflustered, and so very kind, he cleaned himself up and examined the child. She was embarrassed and he put her at ease. He helped us back into the car and then took the hose and cleaned the porch. He was an unbelievably kind soul. Years later, he ran into me downtown and mentioned that he saw that my son won a scholarship to Renselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy to study astrophysics. He was so proud of Richard. He was a wonderful man , and I want to thank you for sharing him with our community. He was always proud of his family, and by example made many families learn how to be closer and better. May all that he shared with you help you in the coming days and years as the memories of a life well lived and so exemplary bring comfort and a smile to your face. My sincerest condolences to you all.

I worked with Dr. Burke during my 16 years as a nurse at Norwalk Hospital. I recall his quiet, reassuring nature with his patients, his friendly demeanor towards the staff, and his great smile. A kinder physician I have yet to meet, in all of my 30 years as a nurse. His patients all adored him.
My heartfelt condolences to the Burke family.

My dad, Richard "Dick" Smith, volunteered alongside your dad at St.Vincent de Paul. My dad always spoke so highly of "Dr. Burke." Even though I never met him, my dad's occasional stories about him made me feel as though I knew him.
What a wonderful man; may he rest in Peace.

A brilliant mind, a great heart for the community in which he served, and the compassion shown to his patients few in his profession can rival. Most vivid memory of Al was at Butternut Basin, where he had taken his children to ski and spend a day with just the kids and "DAD". Al know what it was, as they say, "ALL ABOUT."
Our condolences and prayers go to Al's family.

I’m so very sorry to hear the sad news. I looked forward to seeing “Doc” and Mrs. Burke every Tuesday at Partners. He was such a wonderful man.
His life’s work was so impressive, but his pride and passion was his family. I think I know where every child and grandchild went to college!!
On behalf of the staff at Partners, our prayers and condolences go out to you.

Message from Karen Gottlieb - Americares Free Clinic

Dr. Burke was adored by the entire Americares Free Clinic family - staff, volunteers and patients alike. He was one of our first volunteer physicians starting in the early 90's in Norwalk. His warmth, concern, compassion and competence was admired by all. His smile would lite the room and his energy was contagious. He gave so much to our program and we were so lucky to have him as a dedicated volunteer. We offer our heartfelt condolences to the Burke family - he was one of a kind and will be sorely missed.

I knew Dr. Burke from the day he started his practice. The most wonderful man and doctor. My family lived next door to his office on Myrtle Street. I could run across the driveway when I was a young girl to talk to him when he was finished seeing patient's, getting into his car. I also played golf with him at Oak Hills. Dr. Burke took care of myself, my sister, entire family. for many, many years. He always had a smile for us and always took his time answering any questions my mother had. My sincere condolences to the family.

Words fail to express my regard for your Dad. Dr. Burke was a fixture in my early life whose wry jokes (often at my expense) only made him that much more attractive in my eyes. I made it a point to hit St. Thomas' 10:30 Mass when I was in town in the hopes of running into your parents and having a few moments to catch up with them. Of course, if at all possible, I'd drop by the house for a cold Heineken and some witty repartee, especially if I had one of my boys in tow. I wanted them to know a man I admired. I offer to all of you and your Mom my deepest condolences.
