Domenico Sgarlata, longtime resident of Norwalk, died on Monday, September 11,2017 surrounded by family. He was 95. Born in Scilla, (a small town in Calabria) Italy on May 2.1922. He was the 5th of 8 children of the late Cosimo & Giovanna Sgarlata and was the beloved husband of the late Maria Sgarlata. Domenico is survived by his daughter Giovanna, son-in-law Alfonso, granddaughter Giuliana, brother Pasquale, sister-in-law Josephine and sisters Alba, Tita and Mimma, as well as many nephews and nieces. He is predeceased by his brothers Gaetano, Giacomo and sister Concetta.He was a decorated World War II Veteran and a POW in Nazi Germany. Domenico was a faithful member of St. Philip Church for over 50 years and a Knights of Columbus lifetime member. He enjoyed sports, especially soccer, enjoyed gardening in his vegetable garden and loved the beach, bike riding and going for walks. He truly enjoyed his life centered on his family and his close friends here and in Italy.
His family will receive friends and family on Sunday, September 17th, from 3p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Magner Funeral Home, 12 Mott Avenue, Norwalk. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, September 18, at St. Philip Church, 25 France Street, Norwalk.
